The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet is considered by many to be the ideal balanced diet. Filled with protein, good fats, spices, herbs, and healthy oils, this is a great diet to consider.

What are some health benefits of this diet?

The Mediterranean diet is linked to lower rates of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, improved brain function, and reduced inflammation.

There are a few basics for you to know before you get started:

  1. Majority of your food intake will be vegetables, whole grains, fruits and healthy fats.
  2. Limited intake of red meat.
  3. Avoid processed food, refined carbs, and unnecessary sugars.
  4. Main protein sources are derived from poultry, fish, beans and eggs.

Vegetables that are cruciferous such as broccoli, kale, sprouts, radishes and spinach are staples of this diet.

For smaller meals or snacks, you can incorporate nuts such as almonds, sunflower seeds and macadamia nuts. Not only are these filling, but they are an excellent source of protein and contain healthy fats.

When consuming meats choose grill poultry and fish. Deep fried fish or chicken are not part of the diet.

One of the great advantages about the Mediterranean diet is also the style of eating! These dishes are meant to be enjoyed together with your loved ones; you can have a great support system when you are trying out this new lifestyle!

It is important to remember that any diet should be approached through the lens of a lifestyle change. The more you are able to learn about what is good for your body the better. Make sure you take each change slowly, as then more likely you are to stick with this change. With the right company and mindset, you too can reap the benefits of the Mediterranean diet!
