Eating for better health

Diabetes Awareness Month is upon us. There are many reasons why people have this disease worldwide. One of the major factors that causes diabetes is high blood sugar levels. The good news is, there are many ways to manage our lifestyles to ensure a normal blood sugar level.

Please note, everyone is different. Consult medical advice prior to implementing any change in diet. Furthermore, by consuming these foods, one cannot undo diabetes. Rather, a lifestyle with healthy choices can manage and lower blood sugar levels to some extent.

Here are some small changes to manage blood sugar levels.

Keeping it green in the kitchen:

Cooking a meal? Use low starch vegetables. Low starch vegetables are filled with great vitamins and nutrients. Low starch vegetables high in fiber are easier to digest and keep you full for longer periods of time. Asparagus, celery, cucumbers, mushrooms, olives, and tomatoes are all great examples of low starch vegetables to incorporate in your diet.

For snack time:

Vegetables that are low in starch make a great snack. Next time you find yourself going for a sugary chocolate bar as a midday pick-up, pair these fresh low starch vegetables with a protein of your choice like hummus instead!

Need a drink to satisfy your cravings?

Turmeric milk is a great beverage for lowering blood sugar levels. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory. One of turmeric’s active ingredients is curcumin, a potent antioxidant. Studies have shown that curcumin helps manage blood sugar levels and decrease insulin resistance. If you find the taste of turmeric too strong in your milk, you can also incorporate it in your cooking. Turmeric milk can be consumed at any time of the day. You may find one of our recipes with turmeric here for your reference.

Delicious Dessert

If you’re feeling your sweet tooth get the best of you after dinner, try and grab a cup of berries. Strawberries are known to be high in antioxidants. They also greatly reduce insulin levels and cholesterol levels.

While we cannot undo the effects of diabetes, there are so many great ways to keep ourselves healthy. Through healthy lifestyle choices, exercise, stress management, and of course consulting our physicians, achieving these results is just a step away! With small changes over time, a wholesome life is right around the corner. Be sure to take part in some of these great practices because remember, your health first!
