Constipation

Constipation

Constipation is an embarrassing but very common condition that affects many people at different stages of their lives. The condition means that you are unable to easily pass stools or completely empty your bowel.

Generally, constipation is a relatively short-term condition but for a few, the condition is chronic and can have a major impact on their lives.

The cause of constipation are varied but basically come down to diet, so not eating enough fruit, vegetables and cereals and not drinking enough fluids can all lead to constipation. However, the condition can also be caused by medication, anxiety or depression, or ignoring the urge to go to the toilet.

For the majority of sufferers, improving your diet and lifestyle will cure the condition. Eating more fibre in the form of fruit and vegetables, drinking sufficient water and taking regular exercise should all help.

If this fails, your GP may prescribe a laxative although a full recovery may take a few months while your body establishes a regular pattern again.
