Common Cold

Common Cold

Catching a cold is a seasonal hazard and despite the numerous products on the market, there is little that one can do to either prevent or cure it.

Studies have shown that remedies such as vitamin C, echinacea and zinc have very little value – although regularly taking vitamin C was found to slightly reduce the length of a cold. Neither can a cold be caught by being cold or wet – the only way to catch a cold is to come into contact with the germs responsible – the most common of which is the rhinovirus. However, in itself this has hundreds of different strains so for scientists to be able to cure the common cold, they would potentially have to develop effective medication for each different strain.

The best way to avoid a catching a cold is to simply lead a healthy life. By taking regular exercise, eating a wide selection of fruit and vegetables and avoiding foods high in processed fats and sugars, we ensure that our body’s immune system is as strong as it can be and able to fight off infections when we are exposed to them.
