A healthy and balanced diet leads to a healthy life

A healthy and balanced diet leads to a healthy life.

One should aim to eat three meals a day and one shouldn’t skip meals. Although most of us consume too many calories, skipping meals does not necessarily mean that you will lose weight. Instead, the body’s metabolism just slows down meaning that you burn fewer calories. Similarly, you should never miss breakfast as the first meal of the day ensures that the metabolism is given a kick-start in the morning.

All meals should, of course, be balanced with a variety of foods and it’s a good idea to eat some vegetables or salad prior to eating your main course. This way your stomach begins to fill up on healthy foods. A balanced diet should include fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, nuts, fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products. Also, try eating from a smaller plate; it will help reduce the portion size.

Snacks should be chosen by their calorie-content and the nutrients they provide. When buying groceries get into the habit of reading food labels and check out the number of calories in a single serving and the number of calories from fat. Be smart; cut back on calories from fat. Look for foods low in saturated fat and trans fat, cholesterol, salt (sodium) and added sugars.

Last but not least; drink 10-12 glasses of water a day, and avoid energy drinks or sugar sweetened beverages, many of which have very high sugar or caffeine content.

Remember, it’s your life, your future, Your Health First.
